Food for thought

MESSAGE FROM DANIE:

I noted with concern the destruction in property and lost of lives which were caused by Katrina and Rita. Some of you are directly affected or have a family member / friends / acquaintance that are affected by this natural disaster. Please remember that our thoughts are with you from the whole Kowas team. We are in particular thinking of the Heber family where we understand that Heber III have lost his entire holiday house in Biloxi.

Reflecting on the above I can not help but to be grateful when thinking of all the blessings that we have in Namibia. We are one of the few African countries that are extremely political stable and are free of natural disasters for a number of years. When hunting it always struck me on the amount of wildlife our country has. I have traveled extensively throughout Namibia this year and am amazed to witness the friendliness of our people and the abundance of wildlife that can be found almost throughout Namibia.

Kowas forms part of the Dordabis conservancy which are one of the biggest registered Conservancies in Namibia. A total of 400 000 acres forms part of this conservancy. The size of the Dordabis Conservancy is almost the same size as countries like Reunion, or islands in Greece. If you furthermore think that less than 150 people are inhabiting this area, it remains astonishing that you can stay at Kowas for ten days and not see another car, other people – except the Kowas team – hear a plane or a train, and still be connected to the rest of the modern world via satellite television, e-mails, cyber world and telephones.

I have obtained statistics the other day from the Namibian Environment and Tourism regarding the amount of trophy hunting clients visiting Namibia since 1994. When I look at the USA clients visiting Namibia, only 73 has visited Namibia during 1994 while 1 123 have visited Namibia in 2004. This substantial increase is attributed to the Namibian stability, wide open spaces and abundance of wildlife. We are becoming the most sought after trophy hunting destination in Africa, for the trophy hunter who is prepared to work hard for his trophy. Namibia is rugged, unspoiled and untamed – not for the soft hearted, but for the adventurer who loves nature and wildlife, however you can unwind in luxury at night, enjoying good wine, good food and reflecting the days experience around an African campfire under the clear stars.

I am privileged to experience this every day and have the honor of sharing this wonderful lifestyle with you, and then thinking how many people in the world are suffering of stress, over population, disease, war and natural disasters like Katrina and Rita. How blessed can you be?

KOWAS ADVENTURE SAFARIS ESTABLISHED A NEW HUNTING AREA
We are glad to confirm that a new hunting area have been developed by us in the Dordabis Conservancy. Mr Harry Erasmus, new owner of two farms in the Dordabis Conservancy have granted Kowas Adventure Safaris sole rights to hunt on his properties. The amount of kudu, oryx are just unbelievable. More than 40 kudu bulls could be found on a single morning while it is estimated that more than 500 oryx exists on his properties. The quality of kudu and oryx are excellent while leopard and cheetah are also in abundance. Blue wildebeest, hartebees, springbuck and warthog can also be found in this area, but populations are still growing.

This area provides us with additional opportunity to improve on our existing excellent trophy quality record. The area is different to Kowas hunting territory and enhance our operations.

A tented safari camp will be developed in this area to provide our clients with an opportunity of a traditional old fashioned African hunting safari.

UPDATE ON MATHEUS THEOFELUS
Matheus has recovered completely from his car accident. He is actively hunting for the past two months and he is in his element doing what he loves to do. We thank you once again for your thoughts, prayers and best wishes of recovery.

TOP TROPHIES FOR THE 2005 SEASON
So far this year we are again blessed with a number of excellent trophies that were bagged. I am particularly proud of the fact that us as well as our clients have worked extremely hard to obtain these trophies. I am a firm believer of ethics and the principle of fair chase and it is my motto (credo) that if you can not tell a story about your hunt, it was definitely not worth-it. I herewith would like to congratulate the following clients for top trophies being hunted during the 2005 trophy hunting season to date, at Kowas.

I am proud in the quality of Kudu that were hunted this year to date. We have opened a new hunting area for oryx in the Dordabis Conservancy area. Indications are there that exceptional trophies can be bagged.

75% of all trophies bagged with Kowas Adventure Safaris during the 2005 trophy hunting season to date can be registered in the SCI record book

FRANK KOLEK PASSED AWAY
It was with great shock and sadness to take note of the passing away of our good friend, Frank Kolek. Frank was Morné and Jacques “adapted grandfather” since Frank and Larry Kolek (Frank’s son) have hunted with us in Namibia. We have great memories with Frank and our family together. Frank will always be remembered for his spirit, joy and love. Larry, we want to thank you for introducing us to your Dad. The hunting memories that we have from Frank will always have a special place in our hearts. As we salute Frank’s legacy and life, we extend our condolences to his wife, children and grandchildren.

MARY WALKER – DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER
Bill, Mary and their family have shared their disappointment with us by informing us that Mary has been diagnosed with breast cancer and undergo surgery, followed by chemotherapy – one month prior to their arrival to Namibia for their second family safari with us. Their safari to Namibia has been postponed to 2006. We are glad with the Walker family that when the breast cancer has been diagnosed, Mary and Bill were in their known environment close to the medical personnel they know best. All things happen with a purpose in life! Mary is reacting very well on the treatments. Mary, we are proud of you being so strong and positive. You are a great example to all of us when it comes to a positive spirit and attitude. Bill, thank you for your patience, love and support towards Mary, the children and the whole situation. Your family remains in our thoughts and prayers.

JIMMY HUGHES – OPEN HEART SURGERY

We have enjoyed the privilege of sharing the trophy hunting field with Jimmy Hughes and his wife, Martha. Jimmy has bagged – amongst Red Hartebees, springbuck, black wildebeest, oryx and kudu – a buffalo bull in the northern Namibia area, Caprivi area during his first safari with us earlier this year. After Jimmy’s successful safari at Kowas, we were informed immediately after their returned home that Jimmy has been diagnosed with a heart problem. When Jimmy was scheduled to see the Cardiologist, he then went straight to Open-heart Surgery. He had five by passes. Jimmy is experiencing a speedy recovery. Unfortunately it is frustrating not to return to office for 6 weeks and also not to drive for 3 weeks. Martha, thank you for your support to Jimmy. Jimmy, we are proud of your speedy recovery – take very good care of yourself. We are thinking of you and your family.

HUNTING WITH KIRBY WALKER AND HEBER SIMMONS
I grew up hunting with my Dad since I was 9 years old. I had the privilege to shoot my first big game at the age of nine. My Dad and I have spent weeks in the olden days hunting for meat. It was during this time that I have developed an excellent relationship with him. I have cherished those moments to date and am grateful for the opportunities to do the same with my own two boys: Morné and Jacques.

Unfortunately my Dad passed away eight years ago, but I had the privilege of hunting with Kirby Walker and Heber Simmons - whom are exactly the same age that my Dad should have been today. Their love for hunting and nature reminds me a lot of my Dad. The thing that has impressed me the most was the ability to walk many miles per day in search of that excellent, unbeatable trophy. The shooting ability of Kirby and Heber at their age is something that I wish for if I am also privileged to reach their age. Both of them have been rewarded with excellent trophies, but their real trophy is their determination, stamina, will power and endurance to reach their goal.

I thank you sincerely for bringing back fond memories of my past but also an objective to be in the same state of physical ability at your age.
